Day 3 in Nanning

***I was able to get in 2 posts this AM so be sure and read after this one)

Night time in Nanning. They have these beautiful red paper lanterns hanging from the trees that I love seeing everyday, but at night time with the lights it's magical. They are getting ready for Chinese New Year. Nanning is a town of 6 million people. The region of Guangxi is known for it beautiful scenery, production of sugar cane and it's minority class in China. It is not as big as Beijing. It has a more even mix of cars, mopeds & bicycyles. The people are very curious about us gringos knocking around in their city with two asian babies. We receive lots of smiles along with blank stares. In talking with our guide, the people here are worried about the world financial crisis. I have to say that this communist thing really does not work out as "all for one and one for all." They don't have a form of social security and so they save what they can, they cannot own property as all land belongs to the government "for the people." High rise buildings are going up (although not as much as Beijing), but when we asked our guide he said 60% of these buildings stand empty because the people can't afford to live in them. If you work for a company you receive 3 days of vacation after 1 year and 1 week after 5 years. They do have 1 week for New Years, 1 week for National Holiday. The government recognizes 5 religions (Budism, Taoism, Feng Shwa, Catholism, Christianity) and we are told that about 10 years ago the government said it was okay to have beliefs as it might help give the people some relief. Our guide said that the young generation don't believe in God as it is taught that there is none in school throughout their whole education.

Happy family of 3 now - love saying that. We are at a place called "The Park on the Mountain."

Entry into park. The weather has been beautiful with not alot of pollution....some haze, but warm high 60's and sunny. The Hays are from a northern climate like us so we are the odd people not wearing coats all day. We do bundle our children though as this would not go over well with the locals and we want to leave for home with them.

These were hanging in the trees in the entry way......love them

95% of China come from the Han people (which is Mandarin) and the other 5% are made up of 25 minority groups of Chinese. China wants to preserve these groups so they receive better benefits from the government (easier entrance/guarantee for higher education and if there is any rationing of food/meat, they are able to get things that the Mandarins are not and they can have more children) That kind of explains to me why the majority of orphans come from the southern part of China where the poverty is greater and they need boys to work the fields and take care of the parents in their old age

Love this shot that Darryl took

1 other thing that Guangxi is know for, the bronze drums

Having the time of our lives

This was fun to walk through.....Darryl was a little unsure about this thing.....Dan kept telling him, stop walking like a princess and get across this thing.......it was pretty crickety......but funny watching Darryl taking dainty steps.

Pagoda that was built to honor the soliders who faught/lost their lives in WWII against the Japanese in taking this area. The park sits on the highest point in Nanning.

Sweet moment in the car with Liliah. She slept off and on all day.....I think it's finally caught up with her

Woke up just in time for lunch

This wasn't lunch........feeding frenzy @ the park while Bethany tossed in some fish kibbles n bits

More park

Lunch on our first day on our own. McDonald's never looked so good. We've actually only eaten 3 western meals since getting here. Even for breakfast, I've been eating local cuisine along with a few american breakfast items as those are few. The food though I must say has been outstanding and none of us has had any stomach issues

Our New Friends

The 3 Amigos prepared for take off in our first taxi ride. Hey, all's I'm saying is "what happens in Nanning, stays in Nanning."

On the way to pick up our girls. Becky is trying to brush up on her Mandarin...which later did no good because their daughter speaks Cantonese! These are the little things that you don't know until you get to China.

Entering the hotel where we would be united with our daughters - the excitement level is high!

Moments before meeting Bethany. I captured how they are.....Becky is sweet & funny and Dan is hilarious with LOTS of one liners

First glimpse of their daughter Bethany with her nanny. This is my favorite picture of their moment. You can see both of their emotions and I tear up every time I look at it. Their daughter just turned 3 and was really reserved at first about the whole thing. She is smart, cute and loves to shop....sounds like a perfect little girl to me. She has been having a hard time at bed-time...break your heart stuff.....but I didn't hear any crying last night so I am excited to hear this morning about her breakthrough. I tell you, I have shed more tears watching these older children 3-7 be united with their family. It's much harder for them and you can see them trying to connect and it is such a reward to see them smiling and laughing after seeing them so sad. Dan & Becky have 3 young strapping sons at home who are eager to meet their new sister.

Dan, Bethany & I climbed the pagoda as our spouses decided to sit this one out. I thought it was a sweet moment of the 2 of them

It's Official

It's official, she's ours!

Down the street shot

Let's see what will go in this bucket

What talent

It's official....she's for keeps. According to China on Tuesday, January 13th, Liliah is now legally ours. We spent 1/2 the day going to different offices and signing the legal documents....being asked if we are happy and want to keep our baby....promising never to abuse or abandon them, etc., and handing over the bulk of our dough. We gave out a cheer in the van as our adoption paperwork is now complete with the exception of picking up our daughter's passport on Friday before heading to Guangzhou on Saturday.

We revisited Wal Mart for a few needed supplies, grabbed some pizza hut to go and headed back for a party in Dan, Becky & Bethany's room. I spent sometime playing with Liliah and took some videos (which by the way are taking a long time to load so I will post videos we are taking once back in the US) Later, we decided to be adventurous again and go for a walkabout in the city. That means we had to watch the locals and dart (cross) into the street when they did to safe territory. We ended up at a park to a crowd listening to some live chinese music in the park. We never ended up seeing who the singer was because when the music stopped.....as we were coming up....I am not kidding you.....everyone soon turned (a big crowd of mostly men) and just stared at us. We smiled and then kept moving on as we didn't want to be the show! I was carrying Liliah in the snugli with a blanket draped over her body and wrapped towards me. An older chinese man came walking up to me talking with alot of words and lifted up my blanket to peek under to see how Miss L was attached to me and then was laughing and looked relieved. For dinner, we headed back to a buffet that our guide took us the night before. We had a since of accomplishment by ordering on our own and liking everything brought to us.....okay, so it helped that Glenn took us the night before. We had a nice waitress who learned English in the university and wanted to practice it on us. Here are a few pictures of the day.

Jet Lag The Final Frontier

This is Darryl. I just wanted to say something about this jet lag thing..... This is your brain, and this is a food processor- and not a cheap one from KMart but a high end one with lots of torque like the Bosch one. Put it on the highest "chop through small branches" setting, and then whirl your brains for about two minutes. Now, when you pour them back in your skull you can only pour 1/2 of your brains at the most because we are going to pump in air at a high pressure to fill the rest of the space.

Next, grease the lobby of your hotel with Crisco shortening, then have a pair of rollerblades forcibly tied onto your feet. Now put your new daughter on the other side of the lobby, so that you have no choice but to walk across the greased marble floor to get her. And just to finish it off, activate the default setting in what is left of your brain that causes you to finish only about 1/2 your sentences, and you have some idea of what this jet lag is like. Bless your heart Randy, I'm glad they pay you to travel to China so often because otherwise I would think you were crazy.

Now, what was I saying........................

Gotcha For Good

Here she comes! (Glenn our adoptive guide on left, her nanny is holding her and the director is following)
She was more interested in the toys then our chatter

Future bull rider
Sizing us up and weighing her options
Well, if I'm staying, I might as well have my first bite of cheerios

Belly laughing at herself (she is definitely my daughter as I crack myself up too)

Here she is, the moment we've been waiting for a long time. We are now the proud parents AND in position of our beautiful daughter, Liliah YingXia (XiaXia, pronounced shaw, shaw). The day & moment couldn't have gone any smoother!

We started out the day with our new friends Dan & Becky, who are here to adopt there daughter, Bethany. Anyway, we were on our own our first day until our 2:40 PM appointment to meet our daughters. I'm proud of the 4 of us as we hailed a taxi to head to WalMart and only paid 6 yuan (after the front desk said it would cost 10), finding said store after being dropped off in a metropolis of high rise store buildings....we had to do lots of speaking and hand gestures...nothing obscene (at least I hope there wasn't any of that), purchasing bribery snack items and finding a McDonalds - success.

At 2:40 PM, we headed to the lobby to meet Glenn our adoption "go to" guy and headed to our meeting place to pick up our girls. Afterwards, we headed back to our hotel & rooms to do some paperwork and get some bonding time in with our sweeties. Glenn met us for dinner at a nearby restaurant for some really good Cantonese cuisine. I am lovin' the food right now. We haven't seen anything scary yet and have not had any stomach issues - yeah. The girls were so good. Liliah entertained herself with several chopsticks, soup spoons, bowls and card board tissue box....she was crackin herself up. She has only showed us her happy side so far.....I know, she's being merciful to us.....probably thinks.....I better take it easy on these newby parents of mine!!! Bethany (Dan & Becky's daughter just turned 3) was so sweet.....so animated saying, Ooh when they kept bringing platters of food out. She was reserved at first about eating, but then warmed up and thought.....I think I will have some.....keep it comin' folks. We then headed back to our rooms for some much needed rest. We fed Liliah her first bottle which takes longer with her because of her palette...so she chews to nipple and moves it from side to side....but gets the job done. She stayed up until about 10:30 and her bedtime says 9PM. I don't think she wanted to miss a thing, but she was really content and not fussy. Daddy laid down with her and put her to sleep while I worked on the blog. She slept with me and that was sweet, but I didn't sleep too much because she was moving around & snuggling up to me.....I know.....it's tough! We will see if I make it through the day without naptime. More later....I got up @ 4AM to make sure all of you get to see her face & hear about our day. Thanks so much for following us on our trip. We love hearing from you.

Stay tuned for more Liliah sightings. I need to start getting ready for the day before my little pumpkin wakes up....she slept through the night.

Summer Palace Part II

I'M BACK............I wanted to post more on our first full day in Beijing & our touring of the Summer Palace & The Great Wall. As I mentioned before, our room internet access did not work while in Beijing and both days we were gone touring until later evening.

A very short (cliff note version) history lesson: The Palace was first constructed in 1750 for the royal family exclusive use. One of the emperor's mothers was responsible for the building of this recreation spot for the family including the man made lake. This is a favorite spot for Beijinger's to come & enjoy the outdoors. This is now their park!

It is a huge place and really beautiful, even in the winter. I think it must have been the Chinese who coined the phrase, "the devil is in the details" because the craftsmanship you see here is intricate in all of their artistry. Since I'm posting this in hind site of our Beijing touring, I would say this along with the Great Wall wast was my favorite. I love to garden and so this place was a real treat. The weather was sunny, dry & COLD here. As someone who loves gardens, I can tell that the other seasons would offer beautiful blooms & foliage that would be a site to see.

The Summer Palace....In the Winter!

First picture of us together in China @ Summer Palace
Made some friends while there.....

Entry into the Summer Palace

Group picture @ Summer Palace

We met the group of families that we are touring Beijing with. We have 9 families in our group and I think the head count is at least 30. We are getting to know each other and having a ball.

We went to bed @ 11:30 PM & we're ready for the day @ 5 AM. They changed the touring up on our schedule so today we went to The Summer Palace, jade & cloisonne factories followed by lunch. We then headed to The Great Wall.

Here /are just a few pictures @ the Summer Palace (as again, I'm in a fellow travelers room & don't want to wear out my welcome)

I will make some longer posts and add of pics & some great videos of the Summer Palace & Great Wall sometime on Sunday.

Goodnight from Beijing............

Ni Hao from Beijing

@ Beijing just after arriving.

Sorry our first update is a little later than I wanted, but we got in late & our room's internet connection was not working. I am in another families room with our lap top & need to keep it somewhat short as I'm sure they are wanting to go to bed soon (we are still adjusting to the time)

Well we made the long trek and arrived safe & sound........a little weary, but we made it. We left Seattle @ 1PM on January 8th & arrived into Beijing @ 9:40PM. Somewhere 1/2 way to Japan the tears began spilling over as it was really dawning on my heart that we were on our way to Liliah! When I laid my head on the pillow last night the words that ran through my mind was "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore Toto!"
